Old name Lucknow
Lucknow was known as Lakshmanpur and Lakhanpur in ancient times. It is said that Rama of Ayodhya presented to the Lakshmana. Lakshmanpur known as lakshmanpur.
Lakshmanpur was founded by Nawab Asaf-ud-Daula in 1775 AD. The rulers of Awadh enriched it by making Lucknow their capital. But the later Nawabs proved to be luxurious and worthless. In 1775, Asifuddola or Ashf-ud-Dulah, the fourth Nawab of Awadh, shifted the capital of Awadh from Faizabad to Lucknow. Architecturally, the Nawabs of Awadh haveLa Martiniere College, one of the oldest modern schools in the world, also exists in the city, which was founded in memory of the British ruler Claude Martin.
